Dr. Winston’s lab is conducting translational research involving critical care related illnesses. We are particularly interested in using NMR, GC-MS and LC-MS techniques to specifically examine:
1) Metabolomics of sepsis. We maintain and interest in examining metabolomics biomarkers and using metabolomics to examine
mechanisms of injury in pneumonia/sepsis and septic shock in ICU patients.
2) Metabolomics of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). We are very interested in metabolomics fingerprint of ARDS (both from direct and indirect lung injury) and examining potential mechanisms involved in the mechanisms of ARDS development, severity of injury and the chronic lung changes secondary to ARDS.
3) Metabolomics of traumatic brain injury (TBI). We are interested in biomarkers that can be identified to help classify TBI (mild, moderate or severe), TBI prognostic biomarkers, and whether metabolomics can be used to identify mechanisms of injury in TBI.
Dr. Winston is also involved in a number of clinical trials involving sepsis, pneumonia, ARDS and TBI in the ICU. He is involved in a clinical trial of the potential of using mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy for septic shock.
